Tear down of the east span of the old Bay Bridge continues day by day and will be complete by 2018. I get nostalgic about the loss of an icon like this old bridge. I always loved running across its tunnely interiors in my rental cars when I was excited to get out of town – and relieved to see it when I came back home to San Francisco, always glancing off to the right to view the lovely San Francisco Bay and waterfront in soft evening lights and mists. The new east span is open with a mast that soars vertically like a sail, but it will take years for it to earn its place in our hearts and history.
